Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is one of the most precise diagnostic methods available. MRI is a completely safe visual examination method for human health. Using MRI, high-resolution images of various organs and parts of the body can be obtained, allowing for precise diagnosis. This examination method provides much more information compared to conventional X-rays, ultrasound, or CT scans.

What examinations are performed?

  • For the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system);
  • For tissues of the face, skull base, neck, including orbits, salivary glands, and jaw joints;
  • For the musculoskeletal system, including muscles, bones, and joints, including the spine;
  • For abdominal and pelvic organs;
  • For blood vessels;
  • For breast glands.

Important

To ensure a safe and effective MRI examination, it is crucial to inform the referring physician about any of the following present in the body:

  • Cardiac pacemakers;
  • Neurostimulators;
  • Hearing implants;
  • Artificial heart valves;
  • Aneurysm clips;
  • Other metallic implants or objects;
  • Metal foreign bodies (such as bullets, shrapnel, metal splinters, etc.)
  • Pregnancy

How are MRI examinations conducted?

MRI examinations typically last from 20 to 60 minutes on average. The client lies on a couch inside a machine that generates a strong magnetic field. The procedure produces loud noises in the room, but the patient does not feel the effects of the magnetic field during the examination. It is essential to remain still during the examination as movement can disrupt the process. For this reason, the method is not suitable for young children or individuals experiencing severe pain. MRI is also not suitable for people with claustrophobia, and physicians should be informed beforehand to find the best solution. Personal medications can be taken before the examination if prescribed. In some cases, a contrast agent may need to be administered intravenously.
